Looks like a pile of sand down on the basement floor. Now where did that come from?
What are those brown and yellow things in the sand? Is it some kind of bug?
|
Oh my, they are bugs, snd some have wings. Could they be TERMITES? |
On closer view they look just like ants. - Yes and that's exactly what they are. And this particular subfamily of ants are known as "Larger Yellow Ants" and are more commonly called "Citronella Ants"..
They are easily identified. They are about 3/8 inch long and emit a citronella (lemon) odor when crushed.
|
Outside of the mess they make with the sand they drag in they are harmless. That is they don't bite or sting. This pile of sand was cleaned up twice and it kept reappearing. The homeowner was baffled because whenever they noticed it the ants were not present, instead they were hidden under the basement floor. The ants finally appeared in a different spot and that's when the owner called Fidelity Exterminating. |
Fidelity Exterminating offers treatment for Citronella ants however, unless they are a genuine nuisance, control may be unnecessary. They usually appear inside of a building in the colder months and will many times come up around a basement foundation, especially near a warm furnace, in the dead of winter. In almost all houses that have Citronella Ants other insects and pests will be present. If you are in Fidelity Exterminating's service area call or email and ask us about our Quarterly Pest Control Program. |
